Alabama Shakes is a band that has continued to impress me since I first listen to the track, "Hold On." I remember the moment specifically. I was driving up to Ithaca to visit my friends and I was at the point of the drive where emotions start to get overwhelming. I thought of everything from past relationships, how I was going to say goodbye to people at my internship, what I was going to do with my life after college ("No, I can't be a senior), and simply wondering how I would make it through everything to get where I wanted to go. And like a blessing, that is when "Hold On" started pumping through my Sirius radio. Brittany Howard screamed:
So, bless my heart. Bless my mind. I got so much to do, I ain't got much time So, must be someone up above saying "Come on girl! You got to get back up!!"
And, damn, did those lyrics stick. And while, "Hold On", is their break out hit. Their album Boys and Girls is legendary. My favorite right now is "Hang Loose."
These are the things that keep me sane, motivated, smart, and creative.
This is the simple side of the big, complicated, successful picture.
This is What the Mountains Said to the City.
